1st TEV Winter School on Methodological Issues in Comparative Electoral Analysis

1st Training School
European Winter School Methodological Issues in Comparative Electoral Analysis
Nottingham (UK) 8-11 March 2010

The first European Winter School of the COST Action IS0806 “The True European Voter” was organised and chaired by Prof. Cees van der Eijk, at the Social Sciences Methods and Data Institute of the University of Nottingham, UK, from 8-11 March 2010
This Winter School on ‘”Methodological Issues in Comparative Electoral Analysis” offered an intensive 4-day opportunity for young scholars to update and extend their analytical and substantive expertise in the field of comparative electoral studies. A large number of PhD students and early stage researchers participated.

Most of them have been nominated by the Management Committee members of the COST Action and those participants have been fully subsidized. Other PhD students participating, on recommendation of their supervisor, were associated with both the Marie Curie Initial Training Network on Electoral Democracy and the PIREDEU/EES2009 project.

The focus of the Winter School was mainly threefold:

• Equivalence and Comparability: operationalisation, measurement and structural relationships
• Dealing with Multi-level Data: strategies for data exploration and modelling
• Handling and Structuring Complex Data-Sets: how to get more use from your data; stacking or not?; when to pool data; weighting dilemmas; linking data
